What is Disinfectant and Where is it Used?
A disinfectant is a chemical substance that destroys the growth of pathogenic microorganisms in a non-spore-forming or vegetative state, or prevents them from reproducing. Microorganisms include organisms invisible to the naked eye, such as viruses, bacteria, algae and fungi. Disinfection is not the same as sterilisation. Disinfectants do not necessarily kill every organism; instead, they reduce microorganisms to a minimum level at which they do not harm health or the quality of perishable goods.
The use of disinfectants has become widespread during the continuing spread of the novel coronavirus outbreak. When disinfectant is unavailable, washing hands with soap is the best means of disinfection. Whenever possible, hands should be washed with soap before applying a minimum amount of disinfectant. As disinfectant is a chemical substance, it may irritate the skin. After applying it, allow your hands to air-dry naturally without touching anything or waving them in the air.
Where Are Disinfectants Applied?
Disinfectants are applied to inanimate objects and materials such as tools and surfaces to prevent contamination, and to the skin for disinfection.
When Should Microorganisms Be Eliminated?
During or after an infectious disease, every living and non-living area where microorganisms are or may be present should be cleaned. This includes every object touched by the infected patient, surfaces contaminated by saliva or faeces, healthcare professionals treating the patient, visitors, and every item in the patient's room.
