What Are the Features of Marine Adhesive?
The structure of marine adhesive has low viscosity, making it easy to apply. The quality levels of marine adhesive products vary depending on the brand. It dries quickly and is water-resistant, offering the advantage of being usable even on slightly damp surfaces. Known for its polyurethane properties, marine adhesive is a powerful glue.
Marine adhesives find use in numerous places. They ensure tight bonding between wood materials and are also commonly used to bond metal, concrete, polystyrene foam, and various plastics. Both at home and industrially, marine adhesives can be utilized for repairs and manufacturing of furniture, such as kitchen cabinets, bathroom cupboards, sofas, chairs, and armchair frames. They are also employed in the construction and repair of boats and yachts. In short, marine adhesives are used in any strong bonding application requiring water resistance.
How to Apply Marine Adhesive?
There are certain points to consider when using marine adhesive. For instance, its use is not recommended at temperatures below 5°C. Before applying the adhesive, the surfaces to be bonded should be prepared for the process. Therefore, the parts to be glued should be cleaned and free from dust and grease. At least one of the surfaces should be porous for strong bonding.
When applying marine adhesive, it should be spread as a thin layer over one or both surfaces. After applying the adhesive, the surfaces should be pressed together within 15 minutes. For maximum efficiency, the surfaces should remain pressed for at least 2 hours. The fresh adhesive can be cleaned with acetone. If stored in its original sealed packaging under appropriate conditions, marine adhesive has a shelf life of up to 12 months. Once the packaging is opened, the shelf life may shorten.
