How to Make Slime?

What is Slime?

Slime is the English word used for a new generation play dough, which means “balçık” in Turkish.  Slime is particularly a center of attraction for the kids, and this partially fluid, non-stick material with various colors has become very popular in our country during the recent months. Although it can be found in toy stores, digital platforms and stationery stores, it is a play dough that is preferred to make instead of buying, since it is both fun and easy to make it.

What does Slime contain? What are the components?

People are very curious about the components of Slime, so we are providing a brief information about it;

Slime is a semi-sticky and semi-fluid play dough that contains a non-toxic viscosity substance produced since 1976. In the literature, the main components of the product include polysaccharide guar gum and sodium tetraborate.

How can you make Slime at home?

You can make various colors of Slime, which you can try at home and which is quite simple to make. But first, let's prepare the materials that you will use in making Slime.

List of materials to make Slime

  1. 1 cup of water at medium temperature (slightly heated)
  2. 1 cup of water at room temperature
  3. 3/1 teaspoon of borax (used for gel formation)
  4. Water based polymer glue
  5. Glitters to give a glossy look (you can decide the amount as long as you do not exaggerate)
  6. Food coloring

Slime making

With the help of a teaspoon, add a small amount of borax and food coloring to the water at medium temperature we prepared. It is mixed until it reaches the desired consistency. After that, set the prepared mixture aside while pouring the water-based glue prepared into a container. Add water at the room temperature to this container and mix it. The trick to be considered when combining these two mixtures is first slowly adding the prepared borax and food coloring water to the last prepared container, and mixing with a stick or spoon. This process is continued until it thickens. As the consistency begins to intensify, glitters are added and mixed for a while.

You successfully complete the Slime production when the mixture reaches the desired consistency.

How can we understand if the consistency is correct?

It means that you achieved the right consistency when Slime does not stick to the container in the final stage of the mixture you prepared with the recipe above. Have fun.

Footnote: Borax used in making the slime is considered as a natural mineral. It has an organic structure and is used in some detergents.
